For the past couple of days I have had such wonderful, deep, uncomfortable, and personal conversations with my fellow students/friends, professors, and local strangers. I am incredibly thankful and humbled by this opportunity to challenge my knowledge and explore the areas of unfamiliarity. It is a privilege to have this education, one which questions my known reality and one that complicates the societal structures and institutions in state regarding public health.

Our first day of classes in Wellsprings.

Our faculty are absolutely incredible individuals. They are the strong, inspiring, cultured, holistic, admirable women that I strive to be like one day. They always ensure that everyone feels comfortable and go the extra step to help you out. Not only is the staff wonderful, but the students are incredible. Every person on my program is so driven and highly involved in what they are passionate about; whether that is women’s rights, reproductive health, LGBTQ+ rights, their school’s step team, mountain biking, hiking, traveling, local politics, natural science museum, everyone is involved in something spectacular. It’s weird to think that we have only been together for a couple of days, but similar to other programs I have been a part of, these past few days have created a space for everyone to become incredibly close. I can only imagine what 4 months of traveling will do for us!

The SIT IHP: Health and Community is a highly experiential learning program that focuses on globalization, community, and public health (health equities and inequities, disparities, and determinants). I will be traveling to 3 countries (Viet Nam, South Africa, and Argentina) with 28 students, 1 traveling faculty, and 1 fellow. Throughout the semester I will be taking 4 classes: Public Health from Biology to Policy, Globalization and Health, Community Research Methods, and Ethics and Health, Culture, and Community. We will be learning from our traveling professor, Dr. Laura Steil, and a local faculty in each country. We will have lectures, guest speakers, and site visits. I am beyond excited to learn this semester and see the world!

Much Love, Z
